BREAKING: Former Trump Attorney Jenna Ellis Suspended from Practicing Law for Three Years

Suspension Stems From Ellis’ Guilty Plea in Georgia; States United Called for Discipline Against Ellis in 2023

Published May 28, 2024

Denver, CO — The States United Democracy Center today released the following statement in response to the Colorado Supreme Court suspending former Trump attorney Jenna Ellis’s law license for three years.

Gillian Feiner, Senior Counsel at the States United Democracy Center:

“We applaud the Colorado State Bar for holding Jenna Ellis accountable and suspending her from practicing law for three years. Jenna Ellis abused her law license and committed a crime when she facilitated Trump’s illegal attempt to overturn Georgia’s free and fair election. She undermined confidence in our democracy and endangered hardworking election workers. Attorneys who engage in that kind of misconduct must face serious consequences. No one is above the law.”

States United initially filed an ethics complaint against Ellis in 2022, and the Colorado Supreme Court publicly censured her for that conduct last year. After Ellis pleaded guilty to a felony in the Georgia election interference case last fall, States United and Lawyers Defending American Democracy (LDAD) sent a letter to the Colorado Supreme Court’s Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel (OARC) calling for additional discipline. OARC filed new charges against Ellis in January based on her guilty plea. Today’s decision came after the Court accepted a settlement between Ellis and the OARC. As part of the agreement, Ellis was also required to write an apology letter and pay back costs associated with the case.

States United’s accountability work has also resulted in John Eastman being unable to practice law and recommended for permanent disbarment by the State Bar Court of California. States United and LDAD have also sent a letter to the Texas Bar seeking Sidney Powell’s disbarment following her guilty plea in Georgia.
