Amicus Brief: Thompson et al. v. Trump et al., Swalwell v. Trump et al., and Blassingame v. Trump

United States District Court for the District of Columbia

On July 28, 2021, States United Democracy Center represented Jared Holt, resident fellow of the Digital Forensic Research Lab (DFRLab) at the Atlantic Council, to file an amicus brief in federal court in Washington, D.C., in three consolidated cases. The plaintiffs in these cases are eleven members of Congress and two U.S. Capitol Police officers, James Blassingame and Sidney Hemby, who allege that then-President Donald J. Trump induced and directed his supporters to violently disrupt Congress’s count of the Electoral votes on January 6, 2021. They allege that Trump committed tortious acts and violated District of Columbia Code provisions, resulting in injury to the plaintiffs.

The brief sets forth the overwhelming public information that suggests Trump’s connections to the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol. Additionally, the brief outlines the history of pro-Trump-related violence and then-President Donald Trump’s encouragement of that violence. It explains how Trump has coordinated with and promoted conspiracy-driven movements and individuals who have inspired extremist violence, including Alex Jones and QAnon.

The cases are ongoing.
